Academic Publications
05-2004
  • Hepatitis C (HCV) Physician Practice Patterns
The Academic Collaboration Program of The Bruckner Group developed, conducted, and co-authored a large-scale nationwide study (>1,000 physicians) of HCV physician practice patterns. The study was conducted for the Brooke Army Medical Center of the U.S. Army. The attached document contains the peer-reviewed abstracts for a paper and poster presented at the 2004 Digestive Disease Week conference.

Pharmaceutical Industry Articles, Papers and Other Publications

  • Nature Biotechnology article,
The Bruckner Group is pleased to announce the publication in Nature Biotechnology of "Weighing the Outcomes," the expansive feature article in the February 2008 issue written by Bruckner Group partners Michael Russo and David Balekdjian. The article, a white paper and snapshot from a forthcoming book, explores how the intensification of managed care and employer focus on biological drugs' healthcare value, and payer influence over patient access to biological drugs, is presenting new risks for pharma and biotech companies. The article presents advice and actionable recommendations to companies and executives. Please see the press release (in the "News" section) of February 13, 2008, for more information.

  • Drugmakers: A Dose of Reality
This article, written by BGI partners David Balekdjian and Michael J. Russo, published in the June 19, 2006 issue of Business Week in the Outside Shot column, describes how an inadequate response to managed markets challenges poses a high revenue risk for pharma and biotech companies. Companies have simply not incorporated solid valid propositions at a pace and level commensurate to the health insurance industry’s incremental rollout of cost-conscious drug management efforts. As a result, emergent managed markets strategies have throttled many drug manufacturers’ business models. The article further explains why BGI’s approach to solving this problem, outcomes-based access (OBA), can help drugmakers meet the challenges of the managed markets channel, overcome access restrictions, and prove the value of their drugs. See the press release of June 14, 2006, for more information.
02-2006
  • Irrational Exubera-nce for Pfizer
In this Business Week article of February 15, 2006, Bruckner Group partners Michael J. Russo and David Balekdjian predict that the market performance of Exubera, the new inhaled insulin drug by Pfizer, will disappoint Pfizer stakeholders. Applying an OBA analysis to Exubera, the authors describe how Exubera fails to deliver a value proposition that will prove acceptable to the majority of managed care payers. As a result, the authors predict Exubera will face significant access restrictions that will result in lower Exubera revenues than analysts have predicted.
01-2006
  • 2006 OBA Manufacturers Index
The Bruckner Group announces the release of the 2006 OBA Manufacturers Index. The Index measures companies' ability, capacity, and execution in developing and marketing therapeutics with high healthcare value. This is the OBAMI index mentioned in Business Week June 19, 2006. It is not available online. For more information, contact Bruckner Group partner David Balekdjian.

  • The Year Payers Stopped Threatening
This article presents select top-level findings of the fourth annual Bruckner Group Payor Study, released in January 2005. Payers are moving forward with even greater aggressiveness towards two major cost-cutting goals for pharmaceutical and biologicals utilization. The article further discusses the impact of these actions and suggests how manufacturers should appropriately respond.
01-2005
  • Beyond The Arms Race
While "the arms race" has produced unprecedented sales success for pharmaceutical companies, it is no longer an effective and sustainable model. BGI partner David Balekdjian discusses the current problems and presents a framework for physician detailing and sales success that addresses key unmet physician needs.
06-2004
  • Biologics Beware
Biotechnology and specialty pharmaceutical companies have operated under the assumption that the uniqueness of their products afford them distinct payor treatment rules. While that may have been the case in the past, recent market developments have created a different landscape. This presents great dangers to many biological therapeutics in development.
09-2003
  • Show Us The Value
The Bruckner Group's 2003 Payor Study indicates that managed care organizations have coalesced around a value-centric formulary approval approach. In order to receive preferential formulary position under outcomes-based access (OBA), new therapeutics must demonstrate compelling pharmacoeconomic value (i.e. that they deliver greater value to the healthcare system, relative to the cost and effectiveness of older less expensive therapies).
11-2002
  • Outcomes Based Access: Raising the Bar
This article, highly controversial at publication, was the first article to appear in the pharma press identifying and discussing a dramatic industry paradigm shift. The article describes outcomes-based access and the new basis for how managed care companies are making formulary approval decisions, as well as requirements for those therapies receiving preferential status.
